For our anniversary, we headed to Toriciya which has been on our hit list for quite a while. It is a small Japanese restaurant tucked away from the main street at Cammeray. We were fortunately seated at the sushi bar opposite to the head chef.
All the dishes on the ‘First Time Visit Degustation’ (we were first time visitors after all) menu were excellent. I particularly enjoyed the kingfish carpaccio and yakitori skewers. To mark the special occasion, we splurge on an otoro sushi each. The quality of fatty tuna was exceptional.

Hana Sakazuki (Hong Kong)
Before we left Hong Kong, our friends took us to Hana Sakazuki which is very popular fine dining Japanese restaurant on island. Omakase was the order of the day.
The restaurant sources very high quality seafood and that was reflected in our meal. Uni (sea urchin) sushi was excellent. Our favourite was the progression of texture and flavours of toro sashimi. I also liked the choice of rice, udon or soba noodles at the end of the meal. And the super attentive service from the chef and waiting staff made the meal very enjoyable.

Shoya (Melbourne)
On a cold rainy night in Melbourne, we dined at Shoya. And fittingly we decided to enjoy some yakiniku next to a hot grill.
The choice of meat included in the set menu was excellent. The wagyu beef had great marbling. We particularly enjoyed the sausages. On top of the yakiniku set, we ordered a piece of toro sushi each for starters. It was melt-in-your-mouth excellent.

Cuisine M! (Taipei)
During the Taipei visit, we were recommended by Cuisine M for a Japanese meal. The restaurant, situated at the ground floor of a bank’s office building, had a rather dark dining room which gave diners as sense of privacy – perfect for a business lunch.
For less than TW$3,000, we had a full Japanese banquet with all the fresh seafood: melt in your mouth toro tuna sashimi, juicy grilled crab legs, sweetest geoduck from the hotpot. And for main course there were wagyu steak and foie gras. The variety excited our taste buds and made an excellent lunch.
